STEP TWO:
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXISTING, FREE AIDS FOR TOBACCO TREATMENT
Taking action against tobacco addiction need not be threatening to your staff or your board at first. Also, it does not need to cost anything initially.
At Mackay Manor, we gradually armed ourselves with knowledge and training through free resources available in Ontario.
These resources include:
STOP Program:
The overall purpose of the STOP Program is to help reduce smoking in Ontario. To do this, STOP works
toward two main goals: (1) increase access to smoking cessation aids for Ontario smokers who want to quit,
and (2) enhance capacity in health care settings to deliver comprehensive smoking cessation treatment to
patients.
The STOP Program is lead by scientists and smoking cessation specialists at the Centre for Addiction and
Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Ontario. The team is lead by Dr. Peter Selby, a physician and researcher
at CAMH.
The STOP Program is supported by funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care - Health
Promotion Division.
Addictions Agencies participating in the STOP Program are provided with cost-free NRT for their clients, along
with ongoing training support and knowledge exchange opportunities for practitioners to encourage them to
incorporate up-to-date smoking cessation treatment approaches into their routine practice.
CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) courses:
TEACH Core Course: A Comprehensive Course on Smoking Cessation - Essential Skills and Strategies
This introductory session will help practitioners to screen, assess and treat people with tobacco dependence.
Tools and techniques for enhancing motivation and running cessation groups are also covered.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Identify the major clinical implications of smoking prevalence and provide clear and accurate information
surrounding tobacco use and dependence.
Adapt and apply evidence-based screening and assessment tools and psycho-social interventions for
tobacco dependence.
Identify and describe evidence-based use of pharmacotherapies in tobacco cessation and their
therapeutic use.
Integrate motivational interviewing strategies into clinical practice with clients who are ambivalent
towards behaviour change.
Adapt treatment plans for specific populations with high tobacco use prevalence and/or risk
Contextualize tobacco use within a broader tobacco control policy framework
Apply harm reduction strategies with clients who are not ready to quit smoking.
Access additional clinical tools and resources to use in clinical practice and continuing professional
development.
There are also additional specialty courses within the TEACH framework. Here are the links:
TEACH Certificate Program in Intensive Tobacco Cessation Counselling
TEACH Specialty Course Integrated Chronic Disease Prevention: Addressing the Risks
TEACH Specialty Course: Tobacco Interventions for Patients w Mental Health and/or Addictive Diseases
TEACH Specialty Course: Tobacco Interventions for Women Across the Lifespan
Additional Workshops and Training:
In addition to the free government sponsored programs listed above, Mackay Manor also sought independent
workshops and training for our staff and clients. While this wasn’t free, we found it to be well worth the money
in that it brought about a higher resolve to take further action against tobacco addiction now that we had
foundational tools.
In this regard, we highly recommend Libertas, whose core team has been involved in the deep-
healing aspects of tobacco addiction for over 25 years.
This is their website: www.libertastobacco.com .
We have been successful in the past at acquiring funds from the Champlain LHIN to coordinate Libertas
Tobacco Healing Workshops for like-minded organizations within our LHIN. This has been a no-cost service
for these organizations.
Please contact us if you would be interested in a similar opportunity if it were to become available.
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
